Olympics=Social Housing???
Don’t know if I can allocate marks here for cogitation.
Don’t spose that’ll hinder your rapid eye movements, I don’t really nose.
The olympics are huge. Not only have they been around quite some time and involve a whack of different countries, but for a lot of people (athletes/organizers); it is their lives, their existence, the reason they live. You seem to be omitting that when the opening ceremony begins, on worldwide broadcast, ALL eyes are on canada, and on bc. People all over the world will be wondering who we are, where we are, and what we do. Within that short segment, we will have opportunity to show the world our artistry, our ingenuity, our flair. Throughout the games, in all languages and all countries, it will be ‘in canada this’, ‘in canada that’… our nation’s name will be repeated a hundred fold, then a hundred more, a household word. Finally, the games will close and international viewers will give an exhaustive sigh, having experienced the competition of the world, and once more the ceremony will be our opportunity to tell them something of our culture, in our colors and song. Having the olympics in bc cannot be expressed in simple dollars and cents.
Okay, so a few things have gone over budget, even though the original budget was based on a over-budget scenario, that’s just the way these things go; 700 million here, a billion there. Maybe the cost will stay under the $2 billion, maybe it will go $4 billion, we can’t really be certain. With olympic exposure, maybe bc will be repaid with tourism, maybe the entire thing will be a net loss, it will never be known for sure. A few units have to be cut from the housing, taxpayers are going to have to fork out a bunch more cash, and the books will have to be faked by penciling ‘funding’ down as ‘revenue’ where things like advertising have come up way short. Maybe nobody really wins other than the few stinkbums up at whistler whose property values made them instant millionaires and the handful of athletes and organizers that benefit from the actual games; there certainly aren’t any tickets available for anyone that would like to SEE the games. But I’ll say it again, having the olympics in bc cannot be expressed in simple dollars and cents. You need to reach deep down, deep down in your soul, and think about who you are, who we are, and what the olympics represent. The bottom line here is that we don’t really give a fuck about hosting the olympics, why didn’t the ioc cede them to some country that maybe wants the shit.
